In Optometry 20/20 is seen as excellent vision. The year 2020, however, will be remembered as a somewhat less than perfect year for all of us! Unexpected , stressful and for most a drastic change in work environment – especially extended hours behind computers and digital devices.
As a result we have seen an increase in eye strain caused by computers and other digital devices in adults and children. The first step in decreasing eye strain is prevention. We often talk about the 20-20-20 rule (luckily not the 20-20 rule!). Read more below.

The 20-20-20 Rule
Following the rule is a great way to remember to take frequent breaks. This should reduce eye strain caused by looking at digital screens for too long.
Decreasing eye strain from computers and digital devices
- Firstly, do not sit too close to your screen. Have your computer screen about arm’s length away and your tablets not closer than 40 cm.
- Secondly, think of the 20-20-20 rule. That is, every 20 minutes look at least 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds.
- Thirdly, every hour get up and take a break.
- Lastly, be sure to blink fully and regularly while looking at the screen and use lubricant eye drops if necessary.http://www.thevisioncompany.co.za/booking-form/
If your eyes still feel strained or get dry and red then the best is to book an eye examination.
