KERATOCONUS

KERATOCONUS

WHAT IS KERATOCONUS?

Keratoconus, pronounced “kair-uh-toe-CONE-us,” is a condition where the cornea protrudes outward like a cone. The name comes from Greek (keratokonus) where it literally means “cornea cone.”

Keratoconus causes blurred vision, irregular astigmatism and in some cases, light sensitivity. This condition occurs due to the cornea having an irregular, conical shape.

While there is no cure for keratoconus, there are effective treatment options available. These include glasses and soft contact lenses initially, but typically hard or scleral contact lenses are required. A procedure called Corneal Collagen Crosslinking (CCL) is usually recommended to prevent progression.

Corneal transplantation may be necessary for severe, progressive cases but early detection and management usually prevents this.

At VISION, we take pride in using the Corneal Topographer and OCT instrument to help us diagnose Keratoconus, and to assist in hard lens and Scleral lens fitting
